Dr. John Hudon is an experienced periodontist offering our patients cutting edge technology for gum disease treatment in Auburn, AL. He is able to provide modern and effective treatment with the Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP®). We have laid out the steps involved in the procedure for those considering LANAP® to treat their moderate to advanced gum disease. We are a caring and compassionate practice, dedicated to serving you with the best and most informed experience.

A. Measuring Pocket Depths

The first step in LANAP® requires Dr. Hudon to measure the depths of your periodontal pockets. He will do this using a small ruler, which tells him how deep your pockets are and the extent of the loss of attachment between your gums and teeth.

B. Laser Removal of Accumulated Bacteria

Dr. Hudon will use the laser to remove diseased tissue and bacteria that cause gum disease. He will use a pulsed laser light that is not absorbed in water, healthy tissue, or bone. This serves an important function by leaving healthy tissue and bone behind, making the gum disease treatment minimally invasive and more comfortable for you.

C. Removal of Calculus

After Dr. Hudon removes the bacteria and diseased tissue, he will remove the calculus, or tartar, from the root surfaces of your teeth. He will do this using ultrasonic scaling instruments designed to remove the deposits underneath your gum line. The laser does not remove the calculus, but will help to denature the deposits.

D. A Clot is Formed

The laser makes a second appearance to stimulate the soft tissue, root, and bone at the bottom of the periodontal pocket. The stimulation helps with healing, clotting, and regeneration. The blood will also become sticky and the clot will enough to form a seal around your teeth holding everything in place without sutures! The success of the therapy depends on the patients close attention to the instructions during the healing phase and maintenance period.  Please see the section titled, “The Big Picture” for more details.

F. Adjustment of the Bite

The last stage of the process requires Dr. Hudon to adjust your bite. He does this to make sure that there is minimal trauma to any of your teeth, particularly those that have bone loss.

Dr. Hudon and our staff are specially trained to administer this advanced treatment. We are here to make you feel comfortable and confident in your care and the results of your dental procedure.
