Periodontal Post-Operative Instructions

Some discomfort, swelling, and mild bleeding are normal after periodontal surgery and typically improve within 24–72 hours.

After Your Procedure

• Pain: Take pain medication as directed by your surgeon. Avoid chewing or putting pressure on the surgical area.
• Swelling: Use a cold pack for 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off during the first 24 hours. Warmth may be used afterward for comfort.
• Bleeding: Mild oozing is normal. If bleeding is more than expected, apply firm pressure with gauze for 30 minutes and contact our office if it does not stop.
• Medications: Take all prescribed medications as directed. Do not rinse your mouth during the first 24 hours unless instructed otherwise.
• Eating: Eat soft, nutritious foods and avoid chewing on the surgical area. Avoid very hot, cold, hard, spicy, or acidic foods and alcohol.
• Oral Hygiene: Follow your surgeon's instructions for brushing and rinsing. Do not disturb the surgical site, sutures, or periodontal dressing.
• Smoking & Vaping: Avoid smoking and vaping, as they can interfere with healing.
• Activity: Rest and avoid strenuous activity for the first few days or as directed by your surgeon.
• Sutures: Do not attempt to remove sutures yourself. Your surgeon will let you know when they need to be removed.

When to Contact Us

Please call our office if you experience uncontrolled bleeding, fever, a rash, significant numbness, or severe or persistent pain, or if you have any concerns about your recovery.
