Meet Dr. Guzman

Dr. Luis Guzman

Originally from Venezuela, Dr. Luis Guzman is a dentist with dual specialization in prosthodontics and periodontology & implant dentistry. His practice focuses on full-arch rehabilitation and immediate loading, with a particular interest in fixed solutions for patients with severe bone loss.

Education

Dr. Guzman earned a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology and Cell Sciences from the University of Florida in 2005, followed by his Doctor in Dental Surgery degree from Universidad Latina de Costa Rica (2005–2009). He completed a Fellowship in Prosthodontics at the Universidad de Costa Rica in 2010, then pursued advanced education in Prosthodontics (2011–2014) and in Periodontics & Implant Surgery (2014–2017) at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and the Veterans Affairs Hospital. He earned a Master of Science in Clinical Dentistry from UAB (2016–2017), where his research examined the correlation between CBCT gray values and primary implant stability, followed by American Academy of Periodontology Board Certification in 2018 and a Doctor of Dental Medicine degree through UAB’s International Dentistry Program (2017–2019). He is licensed to practice in Alabama and Georgia.

Clinical approach

Every case is planned by Dr. Guzman personally — from 3D planning and surgical guides to the final prosthesis — so nothing is lost between the plan and the treatment. Surgical guidance is handled in-house, whether through 3D-printed surgical guides or dynamic navigation, which tracks the drill in real time — including for zygomatic and pterygoid implants — supporting precise, minimally invasive placement. Implant positions are captured with photogrammetry for an exact, passive fit, complemented by high-accuracy intraoral scanning, and each prosthesis is designed by the doctor using the latest digital software, then milled in the in-house laboratory under his supervision.

For full-arch cases, having the same doctor perform the surgery under I.V. sedation and the prosthetic rehabilitation streamlines treatment — reducing surgical time, overall time to treatment completion, cost, and miscommunication. An in-house workflow also makes same-day treatments possible today, and allows same-day solutions in the future if emergencies arise.

His training also includes remote anchorage solutions (zygomatic, pterygoid, and nasal implants) for patients with highly atrophic maxillae who may have been told that extensive grafting is their only option — or that a removable denture is all that remains.

Care at your pace

Many of my patients arrive after being told their case is too complex — or that a removable denture is their only option. I understand how heavy that feels.

My goal is simple: that you feel heard, informed, and never rushed. I will explain your options in plain language, answer every question, and make sure you are fully comfortable before we begin anything. For patients who feel anxious about surgery, I.V. sedation is available so the experience itself can be calm.

You deserve a doctor who takes the time — and that is the care I aim to give, at every visit.

Teaching

Since 2019, Dr. Guzman has served as Adjunct Clinical Professor in the Graduate Periodontology Program at UAB, where he helps treatment-plan surgical cases and supervises residents in clinical procedures.

Personal

Patients often describe Dr. Guzman as a friendly and calm doctor. He speaks native Spanish, C2-level English, C1-level Italian, B2-level Portuguese, and A1-level French. He lives in Alabama with his wife, Dr. Britany Matin, and their four children. Outside of dentistry, he enjoys photography, computer design, animation, and 3D printing with his kids, as well as coaching soccer.

A habit of continued learning

In recent years alone, Dr. Guzman has completed over 268 hours of continuing education across 42 courses, with training pursued in Brazil, Italy, New York, Chicago, Dallas, and California.

His most recent focus has been zygomatic and remote anchorage implantology. Most recently, he completed the four-day ZAGA Cadaver Course on Remote Anchorage Solutions in New York (September 29 – October 2, 2026) — 37 CE credits on zygomatic and pterygoid implant rehabilitation for severe maxillary atrophy, with hands-on training on 3D models and cryopreserved specimens, live surgery observation, and immediate prosthesis protocols, led by Dr. Carlos Aparicio and Dr. Jay Neugarten. Earlier in 2026, he completed the University Postgraduate Course in Oral Rehabilitation with Zygomatic Implants at Vita-Salute San Raffaele University in Milan — a three-weekend international program focused on graftless rehabilitation of the severely atrophic maxilla with zygomatic, pterygoid, and trans-nasal implants, including immediate loading protocols and prosthetic planning. Training progressed from surgical video study to hands-on practice on simulators, then cadaver dissection, alongside live surgery observation — covering atrophy classification, CBCT-based planning, intra- and extra-sinus techniques, hybrid zygoma and quad configurations, piezosurgery, and complication management — earning a university certificate with training credits. His first live ZAGA training was a 60-hour zygomatic implant course at the ZAGA Center in São Paulo in March 2025, covering surgical techniques, applied anatomy, prosthetic rehabilitation, management of complications, and the ZAGA concept — including O.R. live surgeries and post-operative follow-up of patients.

He has also completed the two-day Maxilla-For-All program with Dr. Tommaso Grandi in Modena, Italy — focused on graftless, one-day full-arch immediate restoration using pterygoid, trans-sinus, zygomatic, and trans-nasal implants, combining live surgery observation, theory, and hands-on simulator training — along with the All-On-X Digital Workflows Master Course and annual sessions with the Academy of Osseointegration, plus ongoing training in sedation safety — always with the same habit: learning from experienced clinicians and bringing practical solutions back to his patients at home.
